Perennial Knawel (particularly Scleranthus perennis subsp. prostratus) is a biennial or short-lived perennial of Breckland, where it grows on acidic sandy soils in open grassland by tracks and roadsides. It has also been recorded on abandoned arable land and open fallow (P. S. Lusby in Preston et al, 2002).

Prior to being recorded at Santon Valley as an introduction in 2007, Perennial Knawel was last seen in West Norfolk in 1961 at Weeting Heath (Beckett et al, 1999)
