Hoary Cinquefoil is a perennial herb of dry, freely-draining, gravelly or sandy soils, found in open grassy swards on commons, in pastures, on banks, in pits and on tracks and waste ground. Reproduction is by seed, but it does not readily colonise new sites (D. J. McCosh in Preston et al, 2002).

In Norfolk it is quite frequent in the Brecks, on the Wensum Sands to the north and west of Norwich and on the light soils of the mid Waveney valley. It occurs widely but scattered elsewhere in suitable habitats. Like other species of light, freely-draining soils it is scarcer in the Fens, the Claylands and the Broads.
